Our second masterworks concert is being led by guest conductor Donato Cabrera. Cabrera is currently serving as the Music Director of both the California Symphony and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. The first piece of this concert is Huapongo, the most famous work of Mexican composer Jose Moncoya. Premiered in 1941 it is inspired by traditional Mexican folk music from the Veracruz region of Mexico. The second piece is from perhaps the most renowned American composer, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2 “Age of Anxiety”, with LSO’s own Richard Fountain as the featured soloist. Based on the poem by W.H. Auden, which Bernstein described as “one of the most shattering examples of pure virtuosity in the history of English poetry.” The final piece is Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition as orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. After the death of his close friend and renowned Russian artist Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky composed the piece after finding inspiration in an exhibition of his work. The LSO is excited to bring such incredible pieces back to life in what is sure to be an amazing night of performances.
