Learn More About LYSO

LYSO has three orchestras:

  • The Symphony Orchestra (advanced) — A full orchestra for advanced musicians performing standard orchestral repertoire; conducted by Dr. Bruce Wood
  • Philharmonic Orchestra (intermediate-advanced) — A full orchestra for intermediate to advanced musicians performing original compositions or arrangements of standard orchestral repertoire; conducted by Mrs. Laurie Williams
  • Prelude Strings (beginning-intermediate) — A string orchestra for beginning to intermediate musicians that provides the opportunity to develop their participation in the other orchestras; conducted by Mrs. Kathleen Smith

LYSO has sectional coaches that work with each section. These coaches are Lubbock Symphony Orchestra musicians, TTU music professors, local and area school directors and private lesson teachers.

Currently, there are just under 200 members in the program. These are local and area students. They come from as far away as Lamesa and Plains, Texas, and Clovis and Portales, New Mexico. LYSO represents students from 38 schools in 13 different school districts within a 150-mile radius. The ages range from 6 to 18 years of age.

A LYSO season begins in August and goes through the first weekend in March. Rehearsals are held from 2:00-4:30 pm on Sunday afternoons at Monterey High School. All three orchestras attend our Labor Day Retreat at Ceta Canyon, beginning the Saturday through Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The students get approximately 4-6 weeks worth of rehearsals in this one weekend.

LYSO History

The Lubbock Youth Symphony Orchestra Program is a project of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Inc. and was founded in the fall of 1988 by two LSO members, Patrice Barnett and Janeen Holmes Gilliam. The first orchestra contained 54 members and was conducted by the LSO Music Director and Conductor, Gurer Aykal. The LYSO Symphony Orchestra, an advanced full orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra, an intermediate full orchestra, and the Prelude Strings, a string training orchestra, maintain a total number of just under 200 members. The program expanded to include the String Orchestra in 1993, and this is the ninth season of the Philharmonic Orchestra. Participants represent not only Lubbock, but also students from Levelland, Littlefield and Plains, Texas, and Hobbs, New Mexico. All three LYSO Program Orchestras participate in the annual fall retreat at Ceta Canyon during Labor Day weekend.

The LYSO Program gives two formal concerts each year. The LYSO Symphony Orchestra concert schedule (with the help of some Philharmonic Orchestra members) has expanded to include the annual 4th on Broadway Fireworks Concert for an audience of approximately 75,000 people. The LYSO Symphony Orchestra presents a side-by-side concert most years with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Other side-by-side ventures include performing with youth symphonies from Abilene, Amarillo, Ft. Worth and Waco. The LYSO Program has had the pleasure of accompanying Ballet Lubbock for several performances in 1990, 1991 and 1994, including Ballet Lubbock's Silver Anniversary Performance. The LYSO Chamber Ensemble Program, founded in 1993, has grown from one string quartet to various numbers and types of ensembles each year. Since the spring of 1996, a separate concert for the Chamber Ensemble Program has been added to the LYSO Program schedule.

Although the main emphasis is upon education, these ensembles do perform for various functions throughout the area. LYSO began touring in 1990 and since that time, LYSO members have toured to Abilene, Amarillo, Ft. Worth, Irving, Odessa, Seminole, Waco and Wichita Falls, Texas, as well as Santa Fe and Roswell, New Mexico, and Denver, Colorado. In 1995, the LYSO Program helped to host the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra from Hampshire County, England, and in 2002, hosted the Bamberg County Youth Orchestra Festivals, combining youth orchestras from Lubbock, San Antonio, Wichita Falls and other Texas and Oklahoma cities. Since 1991, LYSO has sponsored an annual concerto competition for all current members of the LYSO Symphony Orchestra. Winners perform at selected LYSO season concerts.
